Dinos are fickle beasts. Yeah, you can build with them (or around) the most spectacular theme park in the world. But once only looks too long away, suddenly half the visitors are missing the handbags - and vitals.

Much like John Hammond in Jurassic Park also make the developers of Ark: Survival Evolved dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures of the stars in their game. And somehow the bill does not go well for them so completely.

At its best during our tests Ark is a fantastic survival experience in a diverse and sometimes stunning game world. Another time we stand naked and helpless around on the beach, have to spend hours guarding a penn dino or angry about the many bugs. Fortunately, in these cases the only fatalities is the game fun.

But these are beautiful pictures

Loved and hated

And not just in the game itself we are experiencing a dilemma. In principle Ark is a huge pile of contradictions - and indeed for years.

When we write about, the bill had not worked out, which is actually quite a nonsense. Strictly speaking, Ark might have expected a very short time. Since the release of the Early Access version in June 2015, the Survival is practically a permanent guest in the Steam sales charts and has found millions of fans.

But Ark was faced with some heavy criticism even from the start. First, above all, the abysmal performance even on high-tech computers and numerous game Bug drove buyers to the barricades.

Later there were other controversies: the shift of the promised release date ultimately about more than a year, the decoupling of a Free2Play offshoot and the sale of DLCs in the early access phase is about. And that was until the release with the hefty price increase on the verge and the wrangling over a server-Wipe so on.

According blended User Reviews fall out on Steam. Some have spent thousands of hours in the island world, built their very own Jurassic Park and love Ark despite its failure to idolatry. The others have partly similar amassed much playing time, but are now only disappointed.

For us testers, this means we can with a rating really only into trouble put. Either we are much too lenient and our valuation is too high given the obvious flaws or we fail to recognize the true genius of Ark. Well what the heck, we try anyway.

Alone among dinosaurs

So, what is it in Ark? we enter for the first time a server, we stand naked and clueless around on the beach idyllic islands. About the who, how, what or why the game stubbornly silent. Only through some notes that we find in the game world, and at the very last boss fight we learn at least partly about the mysterious game world, in addition to dinosaurs and fantastic creatures such as Dragons and yetis Life.

First, however, we also have other worries. Our character is freezing, starving, thirsty and also always runs the risk of being breakfast from a stray Dino. Our first task therefore arise organically, we need food, clothing, shelter and a weapon.

So we set up a tree to collect wood, klauben stones and berries on and tinker in the inventory our first tools. The crafting works on recipes, so-called engrams, we unlock with each level-up. We also distribute skill points to values such as life energy, stamina or strength. A thoroughly motivating system that always keeps us a carrot nose.
